# Sign-up forms

> Build a sign-up form for your website, customise its look and questions, and understand how signups reach your contacts.

A sign-up form adds people to an audience and, optionally, to a mailing list. Each form has a hosted page you can share, and an embed snippet for your website.

## Create a form

1. Open **Forms** in the dashboard and create a form.
2. Choose the audience and, optionally, a mailing list.
3. Turn on **double opt-in** to send a confirmation link first. We add people once they click it. Recommended for newsletters.
4. Customise the look and the questions, then copy the embed code or share the hosted page.

## Customise the look

* **Layout:** the button below the fields, or beside them.
* **Button text and colour**, the placeholder text, and the font.
* **Corners:** square, rounded, more rounded, or pill.
* **Name:** ask for the person's name as well as their email.
* **After signup:** a thank-you message, or a redirect to a page on your site.
* **Hosted page:** a heading and description for the shared link.

## Ask extra questions

Add up to 8 questions after the email field. Each one is one of:

| Type | Shows as | Stored as |
| - | - | - |
| Short text | A text box | Text |
| Phone | A phone box, checked for a plausible number | Text |
| Dropdown | A menu with the options you list (up to 20) | The chosen option |
| Checkbox | A tick box, optional or required | `true` or `false` |

Mark a question required to stop submissions without it. Answers are saved on the contact as properties, under the question's key, so you can use them in segments and automations.

Each question gets a key when you add it, such as `question_1`. The key stays the same if you rename the question, so existing answers keep matching. Keys use lowercase letters, digits, and underscores. `email`, `name`, and `website` are reserved.

With double opt-in, the answers are carried through the confirmation link. They're saved once the person confirms.

## Embed on your website

Paste the snippet where you want the form. It contains only HTML and inline styles, with no scripts, so it works on any site and doesn't slow your pages.

```html theme={null}
<form action="<your form URL>" method="post">
  <input type="email" name="email" required>
  <button type="submit">Subscribe</button>
</form>
```

Your copied snippet includes the look you chose, plus any questions.

## Spam protection

Each form has a hidden field that bots fill in and people don't see. Submissions from one address or IP address are rate limited.

## Pausing a form

A form is paused automatically when its domain isn't verified and double opt-in is on, because we can't send the confirmation. Verify a sending domain to resume. See [Domains](/concepts/domains).
